The Sassi areas were to a large extent evacuated in the 50's due to the lack of hygiene and were considered "shameful" for Italy. The solution arrived with a new law in 1986 that assigned the houses to people that were not socially elevated and promised to cover 50% of the investment necessary to restructure the houses with public means. Today a good part of the houses have been recovered.
