At the time of the eruption, the city of Ercolano had 5000 inhabitants and covered an area of 350 metres by 300 metres, roughly a third of the space occupied by Pompeii. The city was positioned on the sea and had a road system with "decumani", parallel to the beach and crossed at right angles by "cardini".
